Bone Density
Bone Density Testing at Healthways Medical Diagnostic Center (HWMDC)
Osteoporosis is a condition that significantly increases the risk of fractures, particularly in elderly women, due to low bone density. In fact, osteoporosis is responsible for about 90% of all hip fractures in women over the age of 65. Bone Mineral Density (BMD) testing is a key diagnostic tool to assess the strength and health of your bones, helping predict fracture risk.
When Should You Consider Bone Density Testing?
Bone density testing, commonly done through DEXA bone densitometry, is recommended for:
- Women under 65 with risk factors for fractures.
- All women over the age of 65, regardless of other risk factors, to assess fracture risk.
Why is Bone Density Testing Important?
The DEXA test is primarily used to diagnose osteoporosis, a condition that causes bones to gradually lose calcium, becoming fragile and more prone to breaking. It is particularly common in post-menopausal women, although it can also affect men. By measuring bone density, the DEXA test helps assess the risk of fractures and allows healthcare providers to develop a treatment plan to prevent bone loss and reduce fracture risk. It is also used to track the effectiveness of treatment for osteoporosis and other conditions that cause bone loss.
When Should You Get Bone Density Testing?
Consider getting a Bone Density test if you have any of the following risk factors:
- Post-menopausal women not taking estrogen.
- Personal or family history of hip fractures or smoking.
- Tall women (over 5 feet 7 inches) or those with a low body weight (under 125 pounds).
- Men with clinical conditions associated with bone loss.
- Use of medications known to cause bone loss, such as corticosteroids (e.g., Prednisone), anti-seizure medications (e.g., Dilantin), or high-dose thyroid replacement drugs.
- Type 1 diabetes, liver disease, kidney disease, or a family history of osteoporosis.
- High bone turnover indicated by excessive collagen in urine samples.
- Thyroid conditions, including hyperthyroidism.
- A fracture from minor trauma or previous vertebral fractures.
What Can Bone Density Testing Do for You?
- Diagnose Osteoporosis: The DEXA test is the most accurate way to diagnose osteoporosis and assess your risk for fractures.
- Track Treatment Progress: If you’re undergoing treatment for osteoporosis or any condition causing bone loss, DEXA is used to monitor your progress.
- Prevent Future Fractures: If your bone density is found to be low, your physician can create a treatment plan to strengthen your bones and help prevent fractures.
