Hematology & Cytogenetics
Hematology & Cytogenetics Services at Healthways Medical Diagnostic Center (HWMDC)
The Hematology Department at Healthways Medical Diagnostic Center (HWMDC) is staffed with highly skilled and experienced Hematologists who specialize in the study of blood, blood-forming organs, and blood-related diseases. Supported by a team of qualified medical laboratory technologists with graduate and postgraduate degrees in Medical Lab Technology, our department ensures quality, accuracy, and prompt reporting of all tests under the close supervision of Consultant Pathologists and Lab Managers.
Our Commitment to Quality & Precision
We utilize advanced automated analyzers and maintain a stringent internal quality control system to ensure the highest standards in our tests. Additionally, our department participates in External Quality Assurance (EQA) programs, including CAP Proficiency Testing for Blood Coagulation studies and EQAS (BIORAD, USA) for blood-related diagnostic services. This helps maintain the accuracy and reliability of our results.
Routine Hematology Testing
We offer a broad range of routine hematology tests, which include:
- Complete Blood Picture (CP/CBC)
- Peripheral Smear
- ESR (Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate)
- ICT Malaria Parasite Test
- Coombs’ Test
- G6PD Enzyme Assay
- Body Fluids Analysis (e.g., synovial, pleural)
- Urine for Hemosiderin
All abnormal results are carefully reviewed and verified by senior Hematologists, with additional rechecks as needed to ensure clinical correlation and accuracy.
Specialized Hematology Tests
For more in-depth evaluation, we offer the following specialized hematology tests:
Hemoglobin Electrophoresis: A test used to diagnose hemoglobin disorders and thalassemia through fully automated capillary zone electrophoresis.
Protein Electrophoresis: This test helps detect abnormal substances such as M proteins, used for diagnosing certain cancers and other protein imbalances.
Bone Marrow Biopsies: Bone marrow aspiration and trephine biopsies are performed routinely for hematological evaluations. These samples undergo special stains and cytogenetic studies for conditions like Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) and Fanconi’s anemia. Reports are reviewed by senior hematologists before being finalized.
Automated Coagulation Studies: Testing for blood clotting (e.g., PT/INR, APTT, FDPs, Fibrinogen) is done using automated systems for accurate results. Specialized tests for thrombophilia (e.g., Anti-Thrombin III, Protein C and S, Lupus Anticoagulant) are also available.
Platelet Aggregation Studies: For patients taking antiplatelet drugs like Aspirin or Clopidogrel, this test monitors the effectiveness of the medication.
Cytogenetic Testing
Our Cytogenetics services involve analyzing blood or bone marrow samples to identify chromosomal abnormalities. This is essential for diagnosing genetic diseases, conditions, and cancers. We offer cytogenetic studies for:
- Dysmorphic Features
- Congenital Anomalies
- Mental Retardation
- Short Stature
- Gender Ambiguity
- Primary/Secondary Amenorrhea
- Recurrent Abortions
- Infertility
