Mammogram
Mammogram: A Key Tool for Breast Health
A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast tissue, designed to detect early signs of breast cancer. It involves using a small amount of ionizing radiation that passes through the breast, producing images on a film for analysis. Today, mammography is considered one of the most effective tools for both the prevention and early diagnosis of breast cancer.
It is recommended that all women begin having annual mammograms at the age of 40. With the rising number of breast cancer cases each year, studies have shown that early detection through regular screenings can significantly lower the mortality rate. Early diagnosis allows for better management and treatment options, improving outcomes for patients.

At Healthways Medical Diagnostic Center (HWMDC), we use the latest Digital Mammogram DRE system by GE USA. Known for its exceptional image quality, patient comfort features, and efficient ergonomics, GE’s mammography equipment ensures the best possible experience during your screening.
What to Expect During a Mammogram
While mammograms are non-invasive, the procedure can be slightly uncomfortable as the breast tissue is compressed between two plates to get a clear image. A skilled technologist performs the test, and the results are reviewed by an experienced radiologist to ensure accuracy.
Types of Mammograms:
Routine or Screening Mammograms: Recommended for all women starting at age 40, typically once a year. Women with a family history of breast cancer may need to start earlier. Screening mammograms are essential for detecting tumors that may not be felt during a self-examination. Since early-stage breast cancer may not show any symptoms, this screening plays a crucial role in early detection.
Diagnostic Mammograms: These are typically done when there are signs or symptoms that need further investigation, such as a lump or abnormal findings from a routine mammogram.
Additional View Mammograms: Sometimes additional views are needed to get a clearer picture of certain areas of the breast tissue.
